Who are the Stars of the Canine Film Academy?

Each dog has been given a rating between 1 and 5.
1 indicates that the dog has had basic training and
has graduated from the first course.

5 indicates that the dog has been with us for some time and the dog is "clicker-wise". A dog with a rating of 5/5 will be able to cope with anything you need, can be retrained on set for new items and is very steady.

Bruno is a rising star at the Canine Film Academy. His rating is 3/5 and going up rapidly.  This is a dog to watch out for!

Jess is a very pretty little Collie Spaniel cross. She has had some private clicker training lessons and attended a course. Jess's rating is 1/5.

Meg is another of our Collie crosses and another sharp cookie. She has attended two courses at school and her rating is 2/5.

Tilly is a Collie Cross with a somewhat nervous disposition. She's a brilliant flyball and agility dog and prefers to be outside. Her rating for outdoor work is 4/5, indoors 1/5.

Dempsey has a rating of 1/5. He has attended school and can perform quite nicely.

Liberty is an extremely well loved member of her family. She has attended the first course and is rated at 1/5.  Liberty has attended a shoot for Dogs Today Magazine and will be appearing in the November Issue.

Lottie Kershaw is owned by one of the UK's top canine behaviourists. She's extremely bright and quick and is currently rated at 2/5. Lottie has attended a Dogs Today Photo Shoot and appeared in the October issue.  She has attended a second Discoverers course to consolidate what she already learned in the first one and has graduated from this class.  She won the Dogs Today "Most Professional Dog and Handler Combination" competition in her class at the December 1999 photoshoot and we're looking forward to her joining us as a "Master" in January 2000.

Mabel has only completed 1 course but shows a lot of potential. She is currently rated at 1/5 but could go higher. Mabel has attended a shoot for Dogs Today Magazine and will be appearing in the September Issue.

Abbey is a black Great Dane. She has a rating of 1/5.

Monty Mondahl is a sharp little cookie with a rating of 3/5. He really enjoys his photographic work.  He has attended 3 shoots with the Canine Film Academy and one for Dogs Today Magazine.  He is a perfect gentleman at all times on set.

Mutley Joined us for his first course in July 1999 and has proved hard work for all concerned!  He takes a little time to get going, but once he does, like a steam train, it takes a while to stop!! Mutley is now rated at 1/5.

Pandora has a rating of 3/5 and has attended three courses at school.  Her forte is being outside and doing outdoor shoots but she is now learning to cope with indoor shoots too.

Bosun has a rating of 2/5 and is a bright little dog.

Lilipup is rated at 1/5 and has attended one training course so far. She's still only a baby and has great potential.

Tess has a rating of 1/5.

Ruskin had a rating of 2/5 when he left school last year, but is owned by another instructor and we suspect his rating should be higher now.

William has a rating of 1/5 and is one of the most unusual dogs we've had at school. He is pure-bred Golden Retriever but as you can see from the picture he is mis-marked. Such puppies are usually put down at birth.  William has a very high energy level and requires a lot of work before he settles down.

Sands attended school for one term and has a rating of 1/5.

Ben is a very talented dog and has been given a rating of 3/5 although he is still in training and this could now be higher.

Blossom is rated at 1/5 and enjoys photoshoots.

Famke is rated at 1/5 and has attended the first course. She is scheduled to continue training later this year.

Nikki Nikki is rated at 4/5, having switched from conventional obedience to clicker training in August 1998 at fourteen months old. She ADORES being photographed and would love the chance to see herself in print..

Baloo is a very striking GSD and is rated at 3/5. He is attending school again this year and we hope to see his ranking rise accordingly.

Crystal is rated at 1/5

Dana is rated at 1/5

Merlin is as yet too young to be rated. He will be attending school soon.  Merlin's father, a Crufts champion, is also in training but we don't have any pictures of him yet.  Blue is currently rated at 2/5 and is (not surprisingly) an exact adult replica of Merlin.

Milty is rated at 4/5 and is a very smart little dog. He also does flyball and agility.

Ollie is rated at 1/5. He is a pet Border Collie with a very sweet disposition.

Téa is rated at 2/5 and has completed her first external photoshoot.

Cassie is rated at 1/5 and is still rather overweight. She has a delightful disposition and temperament and a wonderfully expressive face.

Rio is rated at 1/5 with the potential to go higher if she continues with her school work.

Hunter is a very smart little character whose seen it all and done it all (including Crufts!). He is rated at 3/5.  Hunter participated in the Nature's Recipe photo shoot in June 99 and will be appearing in these advertisements later in the year.

Trigger is a younger version of Hunter with the same potential. We look forward to seeing this little chap progress. He is currently rated at 1/5.

Colin is a super little dog with a rating of 1/5.

Chad is rated at 2/5, was rescued and is working well.

Sid is a Brittany Spaniel which is not a common breed. He shows great promise and is rated at 2/5.

Topaz is an extremely bright spark. Not a typical Springer Spaniel as she is tri-coloured (Liver, Tan and White) and she has a tail. Topaz is rated at 3/5. Topaz participated in the Nature's Recipe photo shoot in June 99 and will be appearing in these advertisements later in the year.

Chess is owned by Katie, who runs the Canine Film Academy. She is rated at 5/5 and can turn her hand to anything. A super dog. Chess will be appearing in Dogs Today Magazine in September 99.

Sophie has been concentrating on her showing career this year. She is rated at 1/5.

Bonnie is rated 1/5 having attended a beginner level course in 1998.

March has already had some film work experience and is therefore rated at 2/5, even though he has only attended one course at the CFA.

Megan was rescued in June 1999 and has just commenced training. Strenuous efforts are being made to put some flesh on her waif-like body, being a Kate Moss look alike doesn't suit her!  Megan participated in a Dogs Today photo shoot in August 1999. She is currently rated at 1/5.

Molly was rescued in July 1999 to keep Megan company.  Again, she needs to gain some weight and she is attending school in September.  She attended a Dogs Today photo shoot in August 1999. She is rated at 1/5.

Lucky is a rescued lurcher.  He is rated at 1/5.  His handler, Catherine, attended both the September 99 Explorers Course and the November 99 Discover's course with her 2nd dog Jake (see below) and we therefore hope to see both Lucky and Jake's ratings rise over the next few months.

Jake has now attended two courses at The Canine Film Academy and is progressing well.  As you can see from his picture, his short neutrally coloured coat makes him ideal for endorsing any kind of collar.  He has improved immeasurably since Catherine first brought him to school and we are delighted to now rate this dog at 3/5.

Sasha is a beautiful black lab bitch and absolutely typical of the working strain of this breed. She's quiet, well behaved and has a rating of 2/5.

Brooks is still very much an adolescent. He attended the July course aged 6 months and will be attending the Discoverer's course in September 99. He's full of enthusiasm and coming along very nicely.

Taffy is a live wire.  He's attended one course and could do with some more training.  Once that enthusiasm is bottled he'll be brilliant! Taffy is rated at 1/5.

Boo reminds me of what Golden Retriever Temperaments used to be all about. She's a sweet natured willing dog, who attended the July 99 course and has just attended the November 1999 Masters Course. We have high hopes for Boo who is currently rated at 2/5 but will go a lot higher as she matures.

Basil is rated 1/5. He's a very cute JRT with a lot of potential.

Ash will be attending the September 99 term and was an uncomplicated little dog to photograph at our shoot. Ash is rated at 1/5.

Beech has attended one course and is signed up for the September 99 Discoverers. A very smart little dog with bags of character. Beech is rated at 1/5.

Masie is as cute as Westies get! She's only attended one course with the CFA so far but is razor sharp. She is currently rated at 1/5 with the potential to go a lot further.

Charlie has not yet attended school and is very typical of the Bull Terrier breed. He loves EVERYONE but lacks some discipline.  As such Charlie is unrated.

Piglet (or Miss Piggy as she's known to her friends) is totally delightful. She's an older dog with a passion for food.  Her exploits include (but are not limited to) bin-tipping, fridge raiding and theft (of food of course).  She's rated at 1/5 and is a complete canine character.

Sasha is still very much a baby and has a great future ahead of her. She is rated at 1/5 having successfully completed the July Explorers Course in 1999.

Oscar is another young dog with bags of potential. His red and white mother shared some of her genes - his coat has a beautiful deep burgundy highlights. Oscar is currently rated at 1/5 but will go much higher.

Simba is currently rated at 1/5 having just graduated from the July 99 Explorers course. He has enormous potential and is a very sharp dog.

Max has had private lessons to bring him up to the standard of an Explorer Dog. He is currently rated at 2/5 and is one of the few un-docked boxers around.  I hope we'll be seeing a lot more of this little powerhouse.

Poncho has to be the most massive Great Dane we'd ever seen.  He joined us unsocialised and dangerously playful for the July 99 Explorers Course.  During the six week course this dog was transformed.  Like all Great Danes he's not the sharpest pencil in the desk, but he's willing and kind.  Poncho is rated at 1/5.

Kiwi has attended several courses at a local Obedience School (not the CFA) and is a steady and reliable little dog.  His rating is 2/5.

Bailey is a 2 year 3 month old labrador bitch, that likes to be noticed, never backward in coming forward, she is always the first to say hello! Bailey also has a very soft and gentle side to her personality, her face can tell a story from start to finish, her appealing expressions say it all. Bailey has an intermediate level of training and can confidently sit, stay, down, etc.  Bailey loves to please and work, she will always reward you at the end with a big kiss. Bailey is rated at 2/5.

Oscar has had some training with another school prior to joining the CFA.  He can sit, stand down and come on command. He can shake hands and roll over from a down position. He will sit or lie on his target, and is quite content to remain in a stay when a novel product is placed directly next to him. He is VERY motivated by food and squeaky toys. Oscar can be a very vocal dog and Pat will be teaching him to speak on command next term.  Oscar is rated 2/5.

Monty Ghent is a people loving dog with a very affectionate temperament. He is eager to learn and enjoys his training. He took a course of private lessons before joining the Canine Film Academy in September 1999.  He is currently rated at 2/5.

Chloe and her handler took the "most professional dog and handler combination" award for their class in September 1999. Chloe is cute and we hope to be seeing more of her next term.  She is currently rated at 1/5.

Jack has not attended a course at the Canine Film Academy but attended the September 1999 shoot as a guest.  This delightful little dog behaved impeccably during his photographic session and was calm and confident thoughout.  He has nice solid stays and a very good temperament.  It is highly likely that Jack will be appearing in Dogs Today Magazine in the very near future.

Lacey is a rescue dog and at the time of the September photo shoot she had only been in her new home for a month.  Considering that she had had absolutely no training prior to going to her new home, Lacey has done terrifically well this term.  Lacey is currently rated at 1/5.

Chantilly attended the September 1999 Shoot as a guest.  She is the mother of Lacey (see above) and is also a rescue dog.  She has nice stays which will improve with a little more work.

Saffron was a delight to photograph at the September 1999 shoot.  She was only 7 months old but behaved like a complete professional, even though she has not yet attended school.  We look forward to seeing more of this dog.

Lupus and her handler, Rachael, won the "Most Professional Dog and Handler Combination" award for their performance at the September 1999 photo shoot.  Lupus can be guaranteed to arrive on set in immaculate condition and beautifully turned out.  Rachael is doing a smashing job with this young dog and we're pleased to rate her at 2/5.

Pearly was a guest at the September 1999 shoot.  This was her first professional photographic set and she behaved immaculately thoughout her session.  She is owned and trained by Rachael Rice who won "The Most Professional Dog and Handler Combination" award for their class at the September 1999 shoot.  We're looking forward to seeing this dog at school.

Jess started training with the Canine Film Academy in September 1999.  We felt a bit sorry for her handlers, who rescued the equivalent of a Ferarri car when they hadn't even learned to drive!  This dog is RAZOR sharp, learns new tricks as fast as you can throw them at her and has a delightful friendly nature.  We've rated this dog at 1/5 but with more training and careful handling she could go all the way to the top.

Harvey has been a delight to train this term (September 1999).  He shows enthusiasm and curiosity at all times.  He has a super temperament and a lot of ability.  Harvey is rated at 1/5.

Matt was rescued two weeks prior to the start of the September term and as such has taken a little while to settle down.  We expect him to concentrate on his work next term and increase his current rating of 1/5.

Blue is a gentleman.  He has numerous showing titles under his belt (including Crufts) and has been an utter delight to work with during this term (September 1999).  As he is currently in his prime he has a very stable and mature attitude towards his work and we have therefore rated him 3/5.

Jasper is definitely an outdoor dog who did not particularly enjoy his September 1999 photoshoot.  We have seen what he is capable of and it was a shame that he couldn't produce the goods on an indoor set under lights.  We feel he is ideally suited to outdoor location shoots.  Jasper is rated at 2/5.

Freddie metamorphosed during the September 1999 term.  He lost his 'sharp' attitude to other dogs and fell in love with the exercises he was taught at school.  He's totally dedicated to his handler, Sarah, and we are pleased to rate him at 3/5.

Jasper is the current 'cute factor' of the Canine Film Academy.  He attended a class as a spectator and was filmed by London Weekend Tonight during his half hour visit!  He's an angel to work with and was fantastic at the September 1999 photoshoot.  Jasper has now completed an Explorers Course and has been photographed for Dogs Today Magazine.  He is now rated at 2/5.

Copper is a lovely little staffie with plenty of presence.  He is currently rated at 1/5.

Button has had a few private clicker training lessons and is essentially an outdoor farm dog.  She's got a delightful nature and is very pretty.  She is currently rated at 1/5.

Derek attended the September 1999 shoot as a guest and has not attended the Canine Film Academy.  However, his manners on set were impeccable and he was an exceptionally easy dog to photograph.  Derek is therefore rated at 1/5.

Buddy attended the September 1999 shoot as a guest and found the whole experience hugely funny.  He is full brother to David, the mascot of the Canine Film Academy and has the same temperament.

Spud is a four year old Red Australian Cattle Dog. He is a very kind cattle dog and gets on well with anyone, especially children.  He competes in Agility and Working Trials and he has gained his CD Ex, UD Ex, WD Ex and TD Open titles. Spud also does heelwork to music and was picked by Dogs Today Magazine Readers for the DT Millennium Calendar  (phew!) Spud has not attended The Canine Film Academy, but we met him at the Millennium Calendar shoot for Dogs Today where he didn't put a paw out of place despite having an extraordinarily long shoot under difficult conditions.  Spud is a real character with immaculate manners.  Sarah has obviously put endless hours of training into this dog and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him for any kind of film work.  Spud is therefore rated 4.5/5.

Benjie joined the Canine Film Academy in November 1999.  In his first term he gained twelve exercises towards his Bronze Clicker Award and he won the Dogs Today "Most Professional Dog and Handler Combination" competition at the Dec 99 photoshoot. This dog is very likely to be used by Dogs Today Magazine and has already been put forward for his first commercial. Explorer dogs are usually rated at 1/5 but this is a truly exceptional character and we rate him at 3/5.

Hugo joined the Canine Film Academy in November 1999.  He has had extensive training prior to joining the CFA and his owner is an instructor for another dog training school.  Hugo has nine exercises towards his Bronze Clicker award and was a pleasure to work with during the Christmas Term.  A lovely dog with bags of potential, Hugo is rated at 3/5.

Freyja attended the Discoverers course in November 1999 after a few private lessons.  She progressed during the term and is now learning down stays.  She is extremely bouncy but most of this will be due to her age and we should see an improvement as she matures.  Freyja is rated at 1/5.

Siena joined the Canine Film Academy in November 1999 with an unfortunate attitude towards other dogs.  He has almost completely conquered this fear now and is working extremely well.  It was a joy to watch this dog "switch on" to clicker training and start to enjoy his work during the November term.  Siena was very well behaved during the photoshoot and we have rated him at 2/5.

Bukhara the lurcher has not attended the Canine Film Academy but has been through several obedience courses elsewhere.  She lives with Siena, the whippet featured above and attended the December 1999 photoshoot.  We really liked this dog, she was easy to work with and has good stays.  She is unrated only because she has not yet attended school but I would guess she would start off somewhere around 2/5.  Definately a good choice for a period film or documentary she exudes elegance and beauty from every pore.

Tia attended one Explorers Course in November 1999 and has been a joy to teach.  She is mastering the basics very well considering that she was only 10 weeks old when she joined the school.  Tia is currently rated at 1/5.

Rosie attended her first Explorers Course in November 1999 and progressed well after a few initial hiccups.  She is being trained using operant conditioning, but without a clicker as she seems to be afraid of the noise.  Once this was established she raced ahead and has caught up with her fellow students.  Rosie is rated at 1/5 and we expect this to improve immeasurably over the next few months.

Jessie has graduated from the November 99 Explorers Course with flying colours.  She is sensitively handled by Sarah, her owner, and has already obtained a deserved reputation for being a very quick learner.  We're impressed with this little dog and hope she continues to train with us.

Jack is still a young dog with endless enthusiam for his job and boundless energy.  He joined the Canine Film Academy in November 99 and has completed and graduated from the Explorers Course.  Jack is rated at 1/5.
